Formed in 2012, the Diabetes UK Lewisham, Lambeth and Southwark (DUKLLANDS) is a family support group for young people and families living with type 1 diabetes.
Primarily a social group, we are open to everyone who is affected by type 1 diabetes, in South East London and beyond.
Our meetings are a welcoming and social environment for families to discuss diabetes and its effects. Support and companionship are some of the simplest yet most important aspects of living with diabetes - this is why our group exists and we want to help in any way that we can.
A message from Liz, Chair of DUKLLANDS
"In 2004 my daughter was diagnosed with diabetes and coeliac at the age of 3. Many of you reading this will have some idea of how that felt and have probably been through something similar. The shock of coming to terms with blood tests and injections, not to mention the huge amount of information one is given, can be overwhelming.
What I didn't have access to back then, was contact with other families who were going through the same thing. We all have tales to share of the highs and lows of diabetic life. Some families might be struggling with support at school, young people might be wondering whether (or how) to tell their friends, parents might wonder how to really manage busy mornings when the meter has been mislaid (along with the football kit) the pump is beeping that it's low on insulin, you realize you have run out of test strips - who better to reach out to than another family experiencing the same issues?
We have set up this group for anyone and everyone connected to diabetes, with the following aims:
- To put diabetic families in the area in touch with each other, for support and friendship
- To enable young people to meet others living with diabetes, young and old, and realise that they are not alone, that they are not different.
- To discuss things we would like to change or find out. We see our consultants a few times a year - but we live with diabetes 24 hours a day. Are there things you would like done differently at clinics? Perhaps you want to know more about current research? Find out about children's school provision, or how to improve it, chat through different options when life gets tricky, or....just let off steam!
Please read through our website, come to an event, or send us an email."
About our events:
Meetings might also include information from healthcare professionals, speakers from diabetes charities, research news, campaigns and ideas to improve your hospital experience. We are guided by you - so if there's anything you want to know about living with type 1 diabetes, let us know, and we will do our best to help!
If you have a newly diagnosed child and would like to meet other parents or carers in the same situation, contact us and we will try and arrange a newly diagnosed meeting for you hosted by one of our members who has had some years of experience.
